Getting in front of the camera on your big day doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few simple tips and a bit of preparation, you can relax, create an environment where you enjoy the experience, and let your true emotions shine through in every photo.

As a wedding photographer in Devon, I’m going to talk you through how to relax and feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day. Hopefully by the end of this blog you’ll be feeling a little less worried about the photography aspect of your day!

How to relax and feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day

Getting To Know Your Photographer

So, you're sorting out the big day and can’t help but feel like you’re going to be awkward in your photos? And you want to feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day, right?

My biggest tip for looking and feeling natural in your photographs is to get to know your photographer!!

It’s not just about picking someone with a fancy camera—it's about finding someone you click with. Grab a coffee or have a chat over Zoom to get a feel for what they’re all about. It’s all about the vibes, really. When your photographer feels more like a friend, you’ll be way more at ease.

Trust is key, and it helps if your photographer shares similar values—like being inclusive, like me!

To me, you’re not just another client, and your wedding isn't just another gig. I am a photographer who’s genuinely interested in your story. Someone who’s kind, caring, and loves to get to know couples on a personal level. It's a great way to ensure the pictures will reflect who you truly are. As an empath, (and someone who also freaks when a camera is pointed at me!) I will always be super understanding if you're camera-shy, and I will do my very best to put you at ease.

A laid-back photographer can make all the difference. Someone who enjoys a good chat and a laugh, making everything feel light and easygoing. It’s not just about taking stunning photos but making the whole experience enjoyable. And if you bond over your shared love for a Netflix binge or sweet treats, well, that’s just a bonus–ehem

Take some time to connect with your photographer before the big day. It'll be worth it!

Arrange an Engagement Photoshoot to Build Comfort

An engagement shoot is a fantastic way to feel more at ease in front of the camera before your big day!

Think of it as a dress rehearsal where you can get to know your photographer’s style and build a comfortable relationship. Not only does it help you practice posing naturally, but it also gives you a chance to see how your photographer captures your vibe as a couple and helps to build that trust.

Plus, it’s a relaxed setting to experiment with lighting, angles, and even outfits, so you know what works best for you. By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll feel like a pro—confident, relaxed, and ready to shine!

And bonus: you'll walk away with some gorgeous photos to use for save-the-dates, invitations, or just to frame and appreciate.

Preparations Before the Wedding

A couple embraces in a sunny, green Devon landscape. The woman in a black dress smiles, while the man in a white shirt closes his eyes contentedly.

Alright, let's get prepped. A bit of mental and emotional prep work goes a long way here.

Start by visualising yourself feeling at ease and happy in front of the camera. You might find meditation or yoga helpful to keep those jitters at bay. It’s not just about calming your nerves but getting into a good headspace where you can genuinely enjoy the moment.

Choosing a location you love can make a world of difference. Whether it's a beach, a garden, or that cute spot where you had your first date, being somewhere you feel comfortable can really help. When you’re in a place that feels right, it shows in the photos.

Thinking about outfits? Go for what makes you feel both comfy and confident. It’s your day, so let your personality shine through your attire. Whether you love nature and want to incorporate flowers or greenery, or you prefer something modern, make sure it feels like you.

And don’t forget to involve your family and friends. Their support can be incredibly grounding. Maybe have a little pre-wedding get-together to loosen up and have a laugh. It’s all about creating a positive vibe around the whole experience.

So, do what you need to get in the right frame of mind and surround yourself with things and people that make you happy. Your comfort and happiness will naturally come through in the photos.

On the Big Day

The big day is here! First off, take a deep breath. Seriously, just breathe.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and nerves, but try to stay in the moment. Focus on the joy and the people around you. Let the photographer do their thing—capturing those spontaneous moments. The best photos often happen when you’re just being yourselves, not even thinking about the camera.

Chat with your partner, laugh with your friends, and let the moments unfold naturally. Your photographer will be there to catch it all without making you feel like you’re constantly posing. If you start feeling a bit overwhelmed, take a quick break with your partner to centre yourselves. Maybe even sneak away for a few minutes to share a quiet moment together. It’ll help you relax and bring you back to what the day is all about.

And hey, don’t stress if everything doesn’t go exactly to plan. The little surprises and unplanned bits often make for the most genuine and memorable photos. So, roll with it and enjoy every second. Remember, your loved ones are there to celebrate with you, and their happiness and support will help you feel more at ease.

Just be yourselves and let the emotions flow. Whether you’re laughing, crying, or just soaking it all in, those are the moments that make your wedding day unique. Trust your photographer to capture all of the magic as it happens!

Try not to focus on the little things (easier said than done, I know!) like if you’re smiling too wide or if your hair is a little messed up- these are the things that make us so beautifully human and unique. Focus on having a good time. If you’re enjoying yourself your happiness will shine through the photos and make the best memories to look back on!

Bringing in Your Personal Style

Your wedding photos should feel like you, so don't be afraid to sprinkle in your personal style. Whether it's fun poses, a location that's special to you both, or little details that scream 'you', make it unique.

Think about the things that make you happy and comfortable. Maybe you love nature? Bring in some flowers, greenery, or even have a wander around the grounds of your wedding venue for an outdoor shoot. If you're into something more modern and sleek, go for it. The key is to be yourself and let your personality shine.

Your attire is a big part of this too. Wear what makes you feel amazing and at ease. Whether it’s a flowy dress, a tailored suit, or something totally offbeat, the important thing is that you feel like yourself. When you're comfortable, you’ll be killing it and it’ll show in the photos!

Also, consider incorporating elements that reflect your values. Maybe you're an environmentalist—opt for eco-friendly materials or a venue that aligns with your beliefs. If you're all about inclusivity and love, choose things that celebrate that.

Remember, your photographer is there to help bring your vision to life. They're keen to capture those little quirks and special moments that make your relationship unique. Don’t hesitate to share your ideas and collaborate to make your wedding photos truly yours.

Let your imagination run wild and bring personal touches to your wedding day. The more 'you' it is, the more you will feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day. And trust, those genuine moments are what make for the best memories.

Communicating with Your Photographer

Bride and bridesmaids joyfully pose in vibrant dresses holding bouquets. Stone wall and pink flowers in the sunny Devon background. They look comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera.

So, once you’ve chosen your photographer, keep those lines of communication wide open!

If you’ve got ideas or specific shots in mind, let them know. Don't be shy about sharing what you love or any concerns you might have. It’s your big day, and your input is super valuable.

Your photographer will totally appreciate knowing your preferences. Whether it's a certain style you’re into or moments you don’t want to miss, speak up. Maybe you've seen some cool poses on Instagram or there's a special location that means a lot to you—share all those deets. It helps in making sure everything aligns with your vision and you don’t have to worry about communicating it on the day.

Got any worries about how you'll look in the photos? Tell your photographer. They’ve got loads of experience and can give you tips to ease those nerves. And if you're camera-shy, they'll have techniques to help you feel more at ease. Remember, they're there to make you look and feel your best. And, if they’re anything like me, they’ll know exactly how you’re feeling!

Also, don’t hesitate to give feedback. If you’re feeling a bit off during the shoot or there's something you’d like to change, let them know right away. A good photographer will be flexible and willing to adjust to make sure you're comfortable. I personally will never force you to do something you’re uncomfortable with just ‘for the shot’!

Keep the convo flowing, and don't be afraid to get specific. As your photographer I have got your back! The more your photographer knows about what you want and the kind of personal you are, the better they can deliver.

It’s all about getting you to feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day so those magical moments reflect you and your partner.

Savouring the Moment

Guests dance joyfully at a wedding reception with colourful lights. Women in dresses and a man in a suit hold drinks, exuding celebration.

Soak it all in. Your wedding day’s gonna be a whirlwind but take a moment to really savour it.

Don’t stress about everything being perfect—those little hiccups often make the best stories. Focus on the happiness, the love, and the laughter. When you’re genuinely enjoying yourself, it’ll shine through in the photos.

Stay present and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Their happiness and support will ground you and make you feel at ease. Let go of any pressure and just be in the moment. Your photographer's there to capture the magic, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

If you need to take a ‘mindful minute’, let your photographer know and they’ll take you off somewhere private where you can catch your breath. Take little pauses with your partner and soak it all in. Those are the memories you’ll appreciate the most. Trust in your photographer’s ability to catch these real moments.

Remember, it’s not about posing perfectly; it’s about finding ways to feel comfortable in front of the camera on your wedding day so I can capture your love and the fun of the day.

Your true happiness and comfort will make your wedding photos truly awesome!
